How Tourmo’s AI Reduced Fleet Accidents by 32% - surpassing industry benchmarks

Proven Success in Fleet Management:  Tourmo’s AI Reduced Risk and Improved Driver Performance

When managing one of the largest fleets in North America, safety isn’t just a priority; it’s a mission. This is where Tourmo’s innovative AI platform comes into play. With over 40,000 drivers covering more than 400 million kilometers annually across diverse terrains and challenging conditions, this enterprise sought a solution to improve safety, reduce accidents, and empower its workforce.

The results? A remarkable 32% reduction in accidents, surpassing the industry safety improvement benchmark of 20% to 30%.

Tourmo’s ability to configure its scoring system to meet the specific needs of each customer is a testament to the flexibility and sophistication of our platform. By analyzing correlations between actual accident data and driving behavior assessments, we ensure that the scoring reflects the unique operational realities of every fleet under our care. This data-driven approach enables us to deliver actionable insights tailored to individual organizations, driving meaningful safety improvements. Here are the key insights from this initiative:

Key Insights and Data-Driven Solutions

Tourmo’s AI-powered telematics and coaching platform delivered actionable insights that allowed the fleet to make meaningful and measurable safety advancements. Here are the key findings that fueled this transformation:

1. Jerking and Braking Hold the Highest Correlation to Accidents

Our extensive analysis uncovered that drivers scoring in the lower 60s for "Jerking" and "Braking" behaviors were significantly more likely to be involved in accidents.

  • Low Jerking Score

Drivers with low Jerking scores were 60% more likely to have an accident. This behavior, often linked to "stop-and-go" patterns or following too closely, became a critical focus area.

  • Low Braking Score

Similarly, drivers with lower Braking scores showed a 40% higher accident likelihood.

With these findings, we adjusted driver scoring by weighting Jerking, Braking, and Speeding more heavily. Coaching efforts prioritized bringing low-performing drivers into a safer range (70+), resulting in a remarkable 60% reduction in accidents for coached drivers

2. Driver Tenure is a Risk Factor

The data revealed a strong correlation between accident rates and the length of time a driver had been with the company. Regardless of driving score or age, newer drivers (less than 6 months with the company) were found to be at higher risk.

  • Drivers scoring below 70 out of 100 scores experienced 4x the accident rate
  • Even top-scoring drivers had a 50% higher accident rate in their initial 6-month tenure.

Our Solution:

We implemented a tailored approach:

  • Automated, more frequent, and customized coaching programs for newly hired drivers to address their unique challenges.

3. Engagement Reduces Accidents

Engagement proved to be as crucial to safety as the behavior itself. Drivers who were highly engaged in the Tourmo app experienced a 50% reduction in accidents compared to their less-engaged peers.

  • Why?

Engaged drivers actively adopted feedback, improved their driving performance, and adapted their behavior based on coaching insights.

Our Solution:

  • Tourmo added Engagement Scores to track system utilization and completion of automatically assigned Coaching Jobs.
  • The company added Tourmo's Engagement score to its internal Rewards Program.

Real Results During Rapid Growth

What makes this success story even more remarkable is that these safety improvements occurred during a period of significant company growth. Over the timeline of Tourmo's involvement, the company's fleet size doubled, and the distance traveled tripled. Managing safety at scale, in tandem with rapid expansion, is a challenge few enterprises can tackle effectively.

Tourmo's powerful tools provided full visibility and actionable data insights, enabling managers to make smarter, faster decisions. The fleet's commitment to adopting data-driven coaching and weighted scoring transformed safety outcomes while managing change seamlessly.
